Baika promotes its sustainable strategy with a focus on carbon, circular economy and fruit recovery

On April 23, 2025, Baika held a key event at its San Felipe plant, focused on sharing its main sustainability advancements in fruit marketing and export. The event brought together leaders from San José Farms in Chile, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia, as well as the fruit marketing, production teams from the San Felipe and Hijuelas plants, the human resources department, and the corporate sustainability team.

According to Daniel Benavides Araya, Corporate Head of HSE & Sustainability, the event aimed to communicate the achievements in the strategic areas defined by the department: carbon footprint measurement, circular economy, and eco-packaging. All of this is aligned with Baika's purpose of "regenerating roots to nourish the world with healthy and sustainable fruit" and with the values that guide its actions: sustainability, safety, teamwork, integrity, excellence, and passion.

Benavides explained that one of the key milestones was the consolidation of the IFCO system, achieving 100% reusable box use for all fruit shipped from the packing facility to supermarkets. This sustained practice has allowed Baika to avoid generating the equivalent of 87,800 kilos of waste in 2024, adding to the 190,000 and 185,000 reusable box shipments achieved in the previous two years. Had single-use cardboard been used, this volume would have resulted in a significant amount of waste sent to landfills, increasing the company's environmental footprint.

In addition, the project with Maifud, which promotes the recovery of unsold fruit to reduce waste, was presented, and progress in measuring and reducing CO₂ emissions at the San Felipe and Hijuelas plants was shared. These efforts not only reinforce Baika's internal commitment to sustainability but also strengthen relationships with strategic clients who demand responsible practices throughout the value chain.

During the event, Baika's work was also contextualized within the global scenario, referencing data from "Our World in Data" on the role of the food industry in carbon emissions, and highlighting that more and more international companies are advancing in sustainable production practices, among which our main clients stand out.

The presentation of the IFCO certificate, recognizing Baika's concrete contribution to the circular economy, closed a day marked by a sense of purpose and the motivation of the teams to continue promoting high-impact sustainability initiatives.

With concrete actions and measurable results, Baika strengthens its leadership in the agricultural export industry, moving towards a more regenerative, resilient future in tune with global environmental demands.
