Baika consolidates its position in Europe to deliver quality fruit 365 days a year

In an increasingly globalized world, having a direct presence in key markets is no longer a competitive advantage, but a strategic necessity. Baika understood this, and the company has committed to consolidating its presence in Europe through Tropical Millenium, its Spanish subsidiary, with a clear objective: to be closer to the end consumer, understand their dynamics, and offer a quality product 365 days a year.

The European avocado market has experienced explosive growth over the past five years, reaching a value of $18.14 billion in 2024. Projections indicate that this figure will double in the next decade. Gonzalo Fuentes, CEO of Tropical Millenium, is clear on this: “This growth is a tremendous opportunity for Baika. Demand is booming; avocados have become a premium product, highly sought after for their versatility in cooking, their health benefits, and their use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.”

With nearly 900 million kilos consumed annually in Europe, establishing a presence in this market was a natural step for Baika. Setting up operations in Spain, one of Europe's leading avocado markets and an excellent gateway to the continent, allows for more effective access to key markets such as France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy, where per capita consumption continues to rise.

“Spain is an ideal gateway. Its strategic location, the quality of the local avocados, and its logistical infrastructure allow us to deliver fruit in optimal condition within very competitive timeframes,” Fuentes points out. Furthermore, Spanish production coincides with low seasons in Latin America, creating a market opportunity that Baika has cleverly capitalized on.

But beyond logistics and market figures, Baika's commitment to Europe has a human and brand component that it deeply values. Being present in Europe has strengthened customer relationships, opened new business opportunities, and boosted the brand's international recognition. "Now we're not only closer to our customers, but we also have access to the best fruit in the Mediterranean and can supply it year-round. Furthermore, identifying new opportunities and strategic partners is much easier from here," explains Fuentes.

However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Despite sharing a language, adapting to European business culture has required flexibility and an open mind. “We have found a top-notch team, committed and passionate. The key has been approachable yet challenging leadership that motivates and guides us toward our goals,” adds the CEO.

Looking ahead, the goal is to achieve sustained growth, diversify the portfolio, and expand operations beyond Spain, provided this leads to improved customer service. Eastern Europe and Italy appear to be promising markets, while also focusing on strengthening our presence in more established markets such as the UK, Germany, and France.

Furthermore, Baika's vertical integration through Tropical Millenium sets it apart from other operators. From production in Latin America to ripening and packaging in Europe, the company controls the entire process, guaranteeing a product that meets the highest standards of quality and on-time delivery. “Today, our team is shipping the best fruit from Latin America, and we take care of ripening and preparing it according to our customers' needs. This integration is already making a difference,” Fuentes concludes.

With a strategic vision, commitment to quality and a clear customer focus, Baika consolidates its presence in Europe, reaffirming its purpose of being a key player in the dynamic and competitive world of avocados.
