Türkiye expands its avocado production and targets the Dutch market
With exponential growth in area and production volume, Turkish avocados are seeking to position themselves in Europe through new trade routes led by exporters such as Exporyum.
The Turkish company Exporyum, headquartered in the Netherlands, is preparing to introduce Turkish avocados to the Dutch market. Its representative in the Netherlands, Ramazan Sari, states that the campaign is already underway and that they will have ample volumes available. “Turkey has a great opportunity to connect European buyers with Turkish tropical fruits,” he says, highlighting the region's commercial potential.
The growth of avocado production in Turkey has been meteoric. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the cultivated area increased from just 70 hectares in 2004 to 4,720 hectares in 2023. In terms of production, the increase was from 400 to over 38,000 tons. This momentum was particularly strong in 2022, when production rose by 343% compared to the previous year. The cultivated varieties exhibit a wide diversity of shapes, colors, and sizes, with fruits that can weigh between 100 and 1,000 grams.
Besides avocados, Turkey is diversifying its tropical fruit offerings. In Antalya province, one of the country's most important agricultural centers, more than 30 exotic fruits are already being cultivated, including mango, pineapple, papaya, kumquat, pitahaya, and passion fruit. Antalya accounts for 55% of the national avocado production, followed by Mersin (43%). Sari cautions that the crop remains sensitive to extreme temperatures, especially below -4°C, but emphasizes that the current growth opens new opportunities for international trade.
