Chilean avocado season records highest production in 10 years
- According to preliminary estimates from the Avocado Committee, the expected production for the 2024-2 season exceeds 235,000 tons, which could be the best period since 2013-14.
- This strong harvest has led to the season being extended until June of this year. Approximately 45% of the total production has been destined for the local market, due to high domestic consumption.
Thus, according to estimates based on current information from the Avocado Committee, the association that represents avocado producers and distributors in the country, this season will exceptionally extend into June, whereas the typical Chilean avocado marketing period begins in August and runs until April. Furthermore, production for the current season will surpass the 2013-14 cycle, when 235,338 tons were produced.
Thus, even without the final figures for the end of the season and with the data for May of this year still pending, it is already projected that production for 2024-25 will be above the 150,000 tons of the previous year, and will be well above the 200,000 tons initially projected for this period, which has meant greater availability of avocados in the domestic market.
This positive extension of the season is due to improved fruit set in the productive hectares, thanks to better weather conditions. This, combined with the application of new technologies and the development of new planting and management techniques in non-traditional avocado-growing areas, has allowed the sector to remain highly competitive and resilient, with a planted area that has not changed and remains at around 30,000 hectares nationwide.
Of the total avocado production for the 2024-25 season, it is projected that approximately 45% will be destined for the domestic market, reflecting Chileans' strong preference for this fruit, recognized for its high nutritional value and contribution to a healthy diet. In fact, in 2024, avocado consumption in Chile reached 8.6 kilos per person, a 4.8% increase compared to 2023, positioning the country as the second largest consumer of Hass avocados worldwide, second only to Mexico.
In this regard, the president of the Avocado Committee, Francisco Contardo-Sfeir, highly valued the fact that almost half of the production remains in the country. “It’s a unique characteristic in the agricultural industry. Avocados are an essential part of the Chilean diet, and that’s something we as a sector deeply appreciate,” he stated.
Meanwhile, approximately 55% of production—around 131,000 tons—is destined for international markets, primarily Europe (59%), Latin America (23%), Asia (9%), the United States (8%), and Oceania (1%). To date, more than 131,000 tons have already been exported.
“This increase in production is very good news for the industry, which reflects the strengthening of the supply and the importance of this sector as an engine of agricultural and economic development for the country, since it generates more than US$700 million a year among small, medium and large producers, plus logistics intermediaries and commercial distributors,” added Contardo-Sfeir.
This positive scenario has been accompanied by the Committee's work on sustainability, promoting since 2021 a roadmap that seeks to consolidate agricultural practices aligned with the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. "Our goal is to continue strengthening responsible production that puts people, communities, and the environment at the center," he concluded.
