San Jose Farms: Innovation and sustainability that make a difference in agriculture

San José Farms is a leading Chilean agricultural company that is setting a precedent in the sector with comprehensive sustainability strategies.

This is how, in the heart of Valle Leyda, Chile, San José Farms is redefining the standards of agricultural sustainability. With more than four years working on a comprehensive strategy, the company has consolidated a triple-impact model that benefits the environment, local communities, and its own competitiveness in the market.

Since 2021, following a comprehensive assessment that identified gaps in its sustainable practices, San José Farms has implemented a strategy based on four fundamental pillars: soil stewardship, corporate integrity, employee well-being, and enhancing its crops, with avocados being a key focus. These pillars have enabled the company to increase its sustainable practices from 33% to 74% in just two years.

A prime example of this transformation is the carbon neutrality pilot program developed in partnership with the startup Neutral Farming ((www.neutralfarming.earth).

This project, being carried out on a 468-hectare avocado orchard in Valle Leyda, located in Santo Domingo, Fifth Region, aims to measure and optimize carbon storage in the soil. Initial results are promising: the average organic matter content reaches 1.99%, and the current sequestered carbon reserve is 86,612 tons of CO2 equivalent. However, the potential is even greater. According to the analysis, the orchard could sequester up to 268,900 tons of CO2 equivalent—75% more—with the implementation of practices such as replacing some fertilizers with more organic alternatives.

The impact of these measures goes beyond the numbers. Regenerative agriculture not only enriches soils and captures carbon, but also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. In the case of Valle Leyda, average annual emissions of 1,600 tons of CO2 equivalent (based on 2021 and 2022 data) could be considerably mitigated thanks to these practices.

Sustainability is also reflected in the use of renewable energy. San José Farms has installed photovoltaic panels in its fields, allowing its advanced irrigation systems to be powered by clean energy. This not only reduces dependence on non-renewable sources but also optimizes the use of water resources, a key factor in a region where irrigation efficiency is essential for water conservation.

Another significant achievement for the company has been securing a green loan from Banco Itaú. This type of financing, which offers preferential rates in exchange for meeting sustainability goals, has allowed San José Farms to implement advanced irrigation technologies and promote the hiring of local labor. These actions not only generate a positive environmental impact but also strengthen the regional economy by providing stable, quality jobs.

In addition to these innovations, San José Farms stands out for its commitment to biodiversity. At its "Huertos de Ucuquer" farm, located in the Sixth Region, the company has implemented conservation measures such as flora and fauna monitoring, the rescue of endemic species, and the creation of a seed bank that guarantees the preservation of native vegetation. These actions, combined with sustainable agricultural practices, demonstrate that avocado production can coexist harmoniously with the care of the natural environment.

Looking ahead, San José Farms plans to continue expanding its photovoltaic generation capacity and further adopt regenerative farming practices. It also plans to implement an efficiency plan to optimize the use of fertilizers, water, and energy, ensuring even more sustainable production.

San José Farms is proving that it's possible to lead in the agricultural sector without compromising the environment or local communities. With its strategy based on innovation and sustainability, the company is not only reaping high-quality produce, but also a brighter future for everyone.
