Peru will surpass Chile as South America's largest fruit exporter in 2025
The boom in products like blueberries and avocados is propelling Peru towards a new regional leadership, with projections placing it as the world's fifth largest fruit exporter.
A report from Peru's Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) projects that the country will reach US$10.194 billion in fruit exports by 2025, slightly surpassing the US$9.979 billion estimated for Chile. This historic shift comes after more than a decade of sustained growth in Peruvian agricultural exports, particularly in crops such as blueberries and avocados, where it has significantly outperformed its southern neighbor.
Between 2010 and 2024, Peru's fruit exports grew at an average annual rate of 19.6%, compared to 6.8% for Chile. If this trend continues, Peru will not only consolidate its regional leadership but will also climb to fifth place globally among the largest fruit exporters, surpassing Chile and trailing only major players like Spain, the Netherlands, Mexico, and the United States.
Although challenges such as infrastructure, climate, and trade policies remain, Peru's rise marks a new stage for South America in the global trade of fresh produce. The Andean nation is thus reinforcing its role as a key player in the international agricultural economy, underscoring the region's transformation into a strategic export hub.
