Peru celebrates 12 years of trade agreement with the EU with record exports

Agro-exports and mining lead shipments, with avocados driving growth.

This year, 2024, marks the twelfth anniversary of the trade agreement between Peru and the European Union (EU), a pact that has boosted bilateral trade and solidified Europe as one of the country's main export markets. During this period, Peruvian sales to the EU have experienced sustained growth, reaching a total of US$8.274 billion in 2024, representing a 19.6% increase compared to the previous year.

Agricultural exports have been a fundamental pillar of this growth, with shipments totaling US$4.148 billion. Within this sector, avocados consolidated their position as the star product, with 360 million kilograms exported for a value of US$800 million, registering an increase of 42.6%. In addition, products such as cocoa beans (+323.7%) and natural gas (+100.5%) experienced significant increases, demonstrating the diversification of Peru's export portfolio.

The "Export to Europe 2025" event, organized by PromPerú as part of the "Exporter Wednesdays" seminars, highlighted the importance of the European market for Peruvian foreign trade. Currently, the EU is Peru's third largest trading partner, after China and the United States, representing a market of over 500 million people with an average annual income of US$35,000.
