Peruvian avocados: global leadership and new markets in sight for 2025
Despite a slight drop in export volume in 2024, Peru consolidated its position as the world's second largest exporter of fresh avocados and is looking to expand its presence in Asia, the Middle East and India.
In 2024, Peruvian avocados reached 35 international markets, consolidating the country's position as the world's second-largest exporter of this fruit and the third most important within its agricultural export basket, with shipments valued at US$1.247 billion. The Netherlands, Spain, and the United States led imports, although significant growth was observed in destinations such as Russia, China, Japan, and South Korea, reflecting the dynamism of the global market.
The expansion of Peruvian avocado production faces both challenges and opportunities. While changes in US tariff policy favor Mexico and disadvantage Peru with a 10% tariff, other markets such as India, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia are showing strong growth and could become new strategic hubs. In this context, the recent acquisition of phytosanitary access to Malaysia and the tariff exemptions through the CPTPP are key advantages for improving competitiveness.
Looking ahead to 2025, ProHass and PromPerú project a 37% increase in production, supported by technological improvements and post-harvest practices. To capitalize on this potential, the country must intensify its diversification strategy, strengthen trade promotion, and foster collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure quality, sustainability, and access to new markets.
