The Netherlands strengthens its role as a central hub of the European avocado trade
With over 500 million kilos imported and 1.7 billion euros in value, the Netherlands consolidates its position as the main gateway for avocados in Europe, highlighting its influence in the global product chain.
Over the past five years, avocado imports in the Netherlands have grown by 25%, exceeding 500 million kilograms, while their commercial value has increased by more than 50%, reaching €1.7 billion. This trend reaffirms the country's strategic role in the international fruit trade, especially as an entry point for avocados from regions such as Peru, Colombia, South Africa, Kenya, and Morocco, according to data from GroentenFruit Huis.
The Netherlands not only imports avocados but also redistributes a large portion of these volumes to the rest of Europe. They stand out as a key supplier to Germany—providing 84% of the avocados consumed in that country—followed by France (14%) and Spain (7%). The scale of this distribution network makes the Netherlands an essential logistics hub within the avocado supply chain on the continent.
Consumption patterns also show demographic differences. Young Dutch people lead domestic consumption of the product, while pensioners account for only 20% of household purchases, well below the global average of 36%. This data reflects a growing trend toward avocado consumption among younger generations in Europe.
