Mexico launches ambitious roadmap for a more sustainable avocado industry

The Avo Institute presents a national strategy with clear environmental goals towards 2035, focused on water, biodiversity, climate and deforestation.

The Avocado Institute of Mexico (Avo Institute) announced the launch of the “Road to Sustainability,” a strategic plan to strengthen environmental management in the export avocado industry. In collaboration with APEAM, MHAIA, and consultants such as Pollination Group and Innovagro, the initiative seeks to achieve ambitious goals such as net-zero deforestation and a reduced carbon footprint by 2035, coordinating efforts from the orchards to the final market.

The strategy focuses on four pillars: sustainable water management, biodiversity conservation, emissions reduction, and protection of forest ecosystems. Key goals include implementing efficient irrigation systems, protecting pollinators, inventorying vulnerable forest areas, and moving toward a deforestation-free supply chain. Since 2011, APEAM has planted more than 3.6 million trees, demonstrating its commitment to environmental restoration.

The “Road to Sustainability” is structured around five interconnected programs that address the entire value chain: corporate governance, sustainable orchards and packing facilities, responsible marketing, and ecosystem restoration. This comprehensive approach seeks not only to meet international standards but also to consolidate a culture of sustainability that ensures the future of the industry and avocado-producing communities in Mexico.
