Jalisco prepares for its key avocado season with expectations of quality and international expansion
The Mexican region plans to begin its peak season in June, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and opening new markets such as Japan, Canada, and Asia.
The avocado industry in Jalisco is preparing for its peak season starting in June, when production is expected to be significantly higher than the rest of the year. According to Eleazar Oceguera, president of APEAJAL, more than 34,800 tons have already been produced so far in 2025, and the main season will extend until February. The United States remains the primary destination, followed by Japan and Canada, markets that value the high quality standards demanded, especially in terms of dry matter, which must exceed 21% to guarantee a good shelf life and optimal flavor.
The Japanese market has been key for Jalisco, especially in previous years when access to the U.S. market was prohibited. Japan not only became a strategic client but also a benchmark for food safety and quality standards. This year, Japanese authorities will visit orchards and packing plants to validate the implemented processes, with the aim of strengthening the trade relationship. Furthermore, Jalisco plans to expand into markets such as Malaysia, South Korea, mainland China, and Chile, seeking to further diversify its exports.
Beyond volume, sustainability and good agricultural practices are fundamental pillars for Jalisco producers. Oceguera emphasizes the sector's commitment to the environment, food safety, and pollinator protection. APEAJAL promotes reforestation and distributes flowers to preserve bees in production areas. "We are doing things right, with transparency, environmental responsibility, and quality. Jalisco has avocados year-round, and we are ready to continue reaching out to the world," concludes the industry leader.
