Argentina's avocado industry grows with challenges in industrialization and producer protection
The crop is advancing in the country driven by increased domestic consumption, but it faces structural barriers and a lack of institutional support.
In Argentina, avocado production is expanding slowly, with approximately 3,000 hectares under cultivation nationwide. The Hass variety dominates the market due to its quality and adaptability, while much of the fruit is destined for domestic consumption, where it fetches higher prices than on the international market.
Low levels of processing are one of the sector's main challenges. During periods of low prices, production should be processed into oil or paste to avoid losses, but currently that option is practically nonexistent. Furthermore, the influx of imported avocados during the local harvest creates uncertainty and limits investment by new producers.
Per capita consumption has shown a significant increase, rising from 140 grams two decades ago to between 350 and 400 grams today, driven by growing interest in its nutritional benefits. However, the lack of suitable soil and the country's political and economic instability could slow the development of the crop in the coming years.
