Avocado imports in Europe fall 22%: Peru grows strongly and closes in on Israel
The European market closed week 12 with 576 containers of avocados imported, representing a 22% decrease compared to the previous week and a 20% decrease compared to the same period last year. The trend continues to be driven by Israel's strong presence, leading with 32% of the total volume, although Peru is rapidly closing the gap, reaching a 26% share.
Spain accounted for 19% of total shipments, followed by Morocco with 8% and Colombia with 5%. Chile, Kenya, and Tanzania also had a presence, each contributing approximately 3-4% of the volume. Peru's performance was particularly noteworthy this week, reaching 152 imported containers after increasing its shipments by 31%, surpassing 100 containers per week.
In contrast, Israel saw a 21% drop in its exports, while Chile, Morocco, and Colombia also registered declines. Peru is the only country that has maintained continuous growth, followed to a lesser extent by Kenya, whose progress is more gradual and has not yet reached Peruvian volumes.
Regarding prices, the port of Algeciras in Spain reported a 5% increase in larger sizes, specifically size 18. From Morocco, Yacine Chaif noted that the season is in its final phase and will likely extend until the second week of April. He also highlighted the role of Moroccan domestic consumption, which during Ramadan can compete with external demand. This consolidation of the local market, along with the end of the season, has reduced shipments to Europe in recent weeks.
