Guatemala is betting on avocados as an engine for agricultural development and exports.
With exports exceeding US$16 million in 2024, the country is strengthening its production chain and preparing new access to key markets such as the United States and Argentina.
Avocado is consolidating its position as a strategic crop for Guatemala, thanks to the coordinated efforts of producers, exporters, technicians, and public institutions. Through Agexport's Avocado Committee, the country has made significant progress in certifications, international standards, and technical training, allowing it to position itself as an emerging supplier, especially in Europe. In 2024 alone, exports exceeded US$16.4 million, with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom being the main destinations.
One of the most important milestones on this path will be the Fifth National Avocado Congress, to be held on July 2nd and 3rd in Antigua, Guatemala, where international experts will address key issues such as export regulations, climate change, and business opportunities. According to Freddy Hochstetter, president of the Avocado Committee, the event is already a benchmark in the region and aims to strengthen the sector's competitiveness.
Guatemala is also moving toward full access to the U.S. market, for which it is working on phytosanitary protocols and good agricultural practices. Furthermore, the approval of Hass avocados in Argentina has already been announced, thus expanding diversification opportunities. With the updated National Strategic Avocado Plan and new technological tools in the field, the country is poised to make a significant leap forward in its export offerings and rural development.
