New boost to sustainable Hass avocado exports from Colombia. Coltrópicos opens processing plant in Guarne

With cutting-edge technology and the creation of more than 100 new jobs, the company is committed to a new line of business that transforms Hass avocados into pulp and guacamole, reinforcing its commitment to the region and the development of its communities.

• Since 2021, Hass avocado exports from Coltrópicos have reached more than 30 countries, making it a key player in the internationalization of the sector.

• The official opening of its processing plant will be on September 22nd, created to add greater value to the Hass Avocado of Colombia and take advantage of the fruit that is not exported due to its appearance, but which retains all its quality and flavor.

• With investments and strategic alliances in energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction and cutting-edge technology, the company reinforces its sustainable commitment, now from the ripening to the freezing of the fruit in the transformation process.

“The opening of our processing plant marks a turning point for the sector and for eastern Antioquia. This year we expect to close with more than 300 containers of Hass avocados from Colombia exported from our sorting and packing plant. With this new line of business, we project shipping five containers per week of the fruit processed into pulp and guacamole, expanding our export scope and target markets,” stated María Isabel Gaviria, Manager of Coltrópicos.

Additionally, this plant will generate 100 permanent formal jobs, 70% of which will be filled by women, and will allow the company to buy the entire production from producers, including that which, due to its appearance, is not exported fresh.”

Coltrópicos' new processing plant incorporates cutting-edge technology that optimizes every stage of processing Colombian Hass avocados. With automatically controlled ripening tunnels and high-efficiency freezing systems, the company ensures consistent processes that preserve the fruit's quality and flavor.

Furthermore, the plant is designed according to strict sustainability principles, reducing its carbon footprint through energy efficiency and rational water use, with treatment plants that ensure effluents meet environmental standards. This combination of innovation and environmental responsibility further strengthens Coltrópicos' commitment to sustainable production development.

"The contribution of this plant to the development of the eastern Antioquia community is enormous. In addition to the 100 formal jobs already generated by the sorting and packing plant, another 100 are now being created by the processing plant. Considering that, according to DANE (National Administrative Department of Statistics), the average rural household consists of three people, our social impact increases from 300 to 600 beneficiaries in the region. This undoubtedly translates into well-being for the communities of Guarne and neighboring municipalities," stated Juan Carlos Naranjo, Director of Projects and Business Development at Coltrópicos.

With this new plant, Coltrópicos expands its international presence and consolidates the position of processed Colombian Hass avocados. The company will be able to reach new markets, virtually anywhere in the world, where fresh fruit faces logistical barriers that make it difficult to maintain its quality and benefits due to long distances. The pulp and guacamole, on the other hand, allow for an extended shelf life and guarantee the product's flavor and properties.

With the above objective, the company will begin its participation as a processing plant in key international trade fairs, such as Fruit Attraction in Madrid (Spain), Anuga in Cologne (Germany), IFPA in the United States and Fruit Logistica in Berlin (Germany), which will take place in the coming months, reinforcing its internationalization strategy and showing the world the quality and sustainability of its products.

The new processing plant also allows Colombian Hass avocados to compete directly with companies from Mexico and Peru, which already have a well-established track record in the processed avocado sector. With this expansion, Coltrópicos strengthens the international positioning of Colombian avocados and demonstrates the country's ability to offer high-quality, sustainable, and competitive processed products in global markets.

“The decision to launch Coltrópicos’ new processing plant, in a global environment marked by political and economic instability, demonstrates the enormous potential of Colombian Hass avocados. This is a sector that, through serious, responsible, and sustainable work, has earned a prominent place in the world market,” stated Katheryn Mejía, President of the Corporation of Producers, Exporters, and Processors of Hass Avocados of Colombia, CorpoHass.
