Experts from the US, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador will analyze the growth opportunities of the Ecuadorian avocado sector

  • Ecuadorian avocado exports have been increasing since 2021; last year, 2,685 tons of fruit were exported.
  • Ecuador has 3,000 hectares of Hass avocado, the most sought-after variety in the international market.
  • Ecuadorian avocados can be harvested year-round, giving the country a competitive advantage.
The Ecuadorian avocado sector is gearing up for the 4th International Avocado Congress, a key event for producers, exporters, and industry specialists. This gathering, to be held from March 26-28 in Quito, aims to promote avocado cultivation and marketing, as well as strengthen Ecuador's competitiveness in the international market.

"We have called it the avocado meeting of the year," said Sebastián Muñoz, manager of GlobalForum, organizer of this Congress, which promises to be a space full of learning and motivate more people to grow it.

The congress will feature keynote lectures by experts from the United States, Peru, and Colombia, who will share their knowledge on the global supply and demand for avocados, export trends, and the agronomic management of the crop. Key topics will also be addressed, such as nutritional management, biostimulation, pest and disease control, as well as fruit quality, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.

Confirmed exhibitors include Shelly Vorster, marketing director of the World Avocado Organization; Giovanni Cavaletto, President of GLC Cerritos; and Cristiam Calderon, a specialist in soil management and plant nutrition, among other industry experts.

In addition, a trade show will be offered where companies that supply inputs and services will present technological solutions for the sector. Simultaneously, networking opportunities will be available, allowing attendees to establish strategic connections with producers, exporters, technicians, and specialized consultants.

The field trip: a practical opportunity

One of the highlights of the congress will be the field tour, in which participants will visit avocado-producing and exporting farms. This activity will provide firsthand knowledge of best practices in the cultivation and marketing of the fruit, offering a comprehensive view of the potential of Ecuadorian avocados.

Avocados from Ecuador

Ecuadorian avocados have gained prominence in recent years due to their excellent organoleptic characteristics and year-round production. With crops primarily distributed in the Sierra region (provinces such as Carchi, Imbabura, and Pichincha) and the Coast (Santa Elena and Manabí), the country has established itself as an emerging player in the export of this product.

Currently, Ecuador exports avocados to more than 30 countries, including demanding markets in the European Union. Furthermore, the first exports to the United States are expected in 2025, opening up new opportunities for the sector.

Registration and event details

The event is geared towards producers, exporters, technicians, and anyone interested in the avocado sector. Registration is open until March 24, allowing attendees to choose between participating in the academic conference, the field tour, or both.

The conference will be held at the Eurobuilding Hotel in Tababela. The registration fee is USD 150 + VAT for the conference, which includes coffee breaks, a certificate of participation, and digital proceedings. The field trip has an additional cost of USD 80 + VAT, which includes transportation and coffee breaks.
