Europe exceeds 1,000 containers of avocados in week 15: shipments increase from Peru, Kenya, Israel and South Africa
Week 15 marked a milestone for the European avocado market with the arrival of 1,040 containers, a 37% increase compared to the previous week. Although still 5% below the volume recorded during the same period last year, it is the first week of 2025 in which the 1,000-container mark has been surpassed. Interestingly, it was also in week 15 of last year that this record was broken, although with a slightly higher volume than this year.
Regarding the distribution by origin, Peru topped the list with a 36% share. Kenya and Tanzania together accounted for 14%, as did Spain and Israel, which also shared the same percentage. South Africa followed with 12%, while Brazil increased its presence to 5%, exceeding 50 shipments. Colombia contributed 3%, and Chile and Morocco closed out the list with 1% each.
The increased supply came from several sources: South Africa boosted its shipments by 30% compared to the previous week, Israel by 69%, and Kenya and Tanzania showed an even more pronounced increase. Meanwhile, prices in Rotterdam remained stable throughout the week, without significant fluctuations. In contrast, the Spanish market saw a 6% increase in size 18 fruit, driven by higher prices for fruit from Morocco. Production in Spain and Portugal, however, remained largely unchanged.
The dynamism observed this week reflects the progressive entry of multiple origins into the European market, creating an increasingly competitive scenario for the second quarter of the year.
