Avocado market in Europe
Europe receives 652 shipments and grows 14% in week 3
Week 3 ended with 652 shipments, a weekly increase of 14% and an 11% year-on-year increase, with Spain and Israel accounting for more than half of the volume that arrived in Europe.
The European market saw a 14% increase in volume during week 3, with an estimated 652 shipments arriving on the continent. Compared to the same week last year, this represents an 11% increase.
During this week, Spain accounted for the largest share of the market with 28% of arrivals, followed by Israel with 27%, Colombia with 23%, Chile with 14%, and Morocco with approximately 7%. Among the weekly variations, the increase from Spain stood out, with its volume rising by more than 80% compared to the previous week. Morocco also showed a significant increase, while Israel registered a decrease of nearly 9%. The volume from Mexico remained low and showed a further decline.
Regarding prices in the European market, specifically in Rotterdam, differences were observed according to size. The largest sizes saw decreases, such as sizes 14 and 18, with drops of around 3%. In contrast, medium sizes registered price increases, notably size 22 with a 7% rise, while the smallest size, 32, decreased by 4%. This information corresponds primarily to fruit of Colombian origin.
In Spain, meanwhile, a significant price increase was observed, especially for size 18 avocados, with rises ranging between 25% and 30%. Adding to this, Gabriel Katkovcin noted that Colombia is beginning its peak season, which could alter container distribution and allow for a greater supply of large and medium-sized fruit. He added that Peruvian avocados from the highlands are also arriving, a source that is usually destined for China at this time of year, but whose large and medium sizes are now reaching Europe, a situation that has driven prices up in the Dutch market in recent weeks.
