Spain strengthens its commitment to quality avocados and international promotion

The sector is working on differentiation and professionalization to consolidate its position in the global market, according to the conclusions of the III International Avocado Conference.

The Spanish avocado industry is focusing on differentiation and top quality to stand out in international markets. This was one of the main conclusions of the 3rd International Avocado Conference, organized by the Association of Avocado Producers (ASOPROA) and the Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA). More than 300 professionals participated in the event, including marketers, fertilization and irrigation experts, nursery owners, and researchers, with the aim of sharing knowledge and developing strategies to strengthen the sector.

The president of AVA-ASAJA, Cristóbal Aguado, emphasized the importance of organization and innovation for the sector to become more competitive and consolidate a quality brand that differentiates it from imports. Along these lines, the Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Barrachina, reaffirmed his commitment to the professionalization of the sector and the 'Aguacates CV' quality brand.

In a roundtable discussion with distributors, Celestino Recatalá, president of ASOPROA, called for strengthening the first nationally produced brand, 'Aguacates CV', whose launch in supermarkets has already begun. Furthermore, ASOPROA is willing to license its 'Aguacates de España' brand under an agreement with the Interprofessional Association.

Other industry experts emphasized the need for promotion to increase consumption, the creation of a European Avocado Interprofessional Organization, and the differentiation of varieties such as Lamb Hass. Strategies to leverage the proximity and sustainability of Spanish avocados were also discussed.

The event included panels on adapting the crop to climate change, agronomic management in Mediterranean climates, the importance of pollinators, and advances in new varieties such as Luna UCR. These discussions reinforce the sector's commitment to innovation and sustainability, key to the future of Spanish avocados.
