The global avocado market: an unstoppable expansion towards 2030

Avocado exports are diversifying as new countries enter the international market. Mexico and Peru maintain their leading positions, while key players are emerging in Africa, Central America, and South America.

During the Global Avocado Summit 2024 , Gonzalo Salinas, an analyst at Rabo Research, highlighted the dynamism of the global avocado market, with an upward trend in exports and the addition of new exporting countries. In 2023, there were already 23 exporting nations, and this number is projected to reach 30 by 2030, boosting global availability of this fruit, which could exceed 3 million tons annually.

Mexico and Peru continue to lead the trade, accounting for two-thirds of global supply. However, countries like Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador in South America, and African nations such as Kenya, Morocco, and South Africa, are gaining ground with increasing exports. Furthermore, Central America is showing significant progress, with Guatemala recently approved to export to the United States, joining Nicaragua and Honduras.

According to Salinas, this diversification ensures sustained market growth, but with challenges associated with replacing productive hectares and seeking added value in exports. Even so, the future of avocados looks bright, with a greater international presence and new commercial opportunities by 2030.
