The US avocado market is growing 32% compared to last year, with California gaining prominence.

At the close of week 4, the U.S. avocado market saw shipments of nearly 2,000 containers via truck and sea freight, representing an 8% increase over the previous week. Compared to the same period last year, the volume is 32% higher, reflecting improved availability and supply.

One of the factors that has surprised the market is the early start of the California season, which has positioned it as the second-largest supplier of avocados to the United States. In market distribution, Mexico maintains its dominance with 85% of the supply, followed by California with 8% and Colombia with 5%. Other origins represent just 1%. The growth in volume shipped by California stands out, increasing by 86% compared to the previous week. In Mexico, the supply remains stable with a minimal upward variation of 0.4%, while Colombia registers a 57% increase compared to week 3.

Peru, although it has started sending products, is not yet fully participating in the dynamics of the US market, as it prioritizes shipments to Europe at this stage of the season.

Regarding prices, a general decrease was observed across all calibers, with the largest reductions in the smaller calibers. Calibers 70 and 84 experienced a 21% drop, while larger calibers, although also decreasing, remain at high levels.

Antonio Villaseñor noted in his most recent column for Avonews that the two key weeks for supplying Super Bowl demand have passed and that fruit harvesting has slowed due to lower market demand. With inventories full for the event's promotions, a significant drop in volume is expected next week, as orders were placed in advance. Traditionally, orders decrease after the Super Bowl, followed by a subsequent recovery.

For his part, Sergio Paz warned in his column about the need to monitor the impact of the measures implemented by the new US administration, especially in exporting countries and in California, where the availability of labor for the harvest could be affected. The evolution of these policies will be key to determining market behavior in the coming weeks.
