The rise of Guatemalan Hass avocados and their projection towards international markets

Guatemala has begun to carve out a niche in the competitive global avocado market, with a growing industry seeking to diversify its export destinations and strengthen its international presence. While the country has historically been recognized for its agricultural diversity, in recent years it has seen significant growth in avocado production, particularly of the Hass variety, with efforts focused on opening new markets and improving competitiveness.

The growth of Guatemala's avocado industry has been driven primarily by domestic demand and exports to Central American and European countries. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), avocados are among the fastest-growing crops, with cultivated areas exceeding 5,000 hectares in various regions of the country, such as Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez. The main harvest season is concentrated between September and February, coinciding with peak international demand in European markets.

The potential of Guatemalan avocados, due to both their favorable geographic conditions and the quality of their fruit, has led to growing interest in expanding production and seeking new export markets. According to official figures, in 2023, Guatemala exported approximately 320 containers to Europe, and this number is expected to increase this year thanks to expanded production and improved harvesting processes.

In a recent interview with Gabriela Ríos, executive director of the National Avocado Association of Guatemala (Anaguacate), the challenges and opportunities facing the Guatemalan avocado industry were discussed. Ríos emphasized the importance of positioning Guatemala as a new origin for Hass avocados, stating that the country has a unique history with this fruit.

"The avocado in Guatemala has a very interesting history regarding the origin of the Hass avocado, which is said to have originated with Rudolph Hass. That's why we called the event we held on September 29th the Guatemala Origin Convention 2024. We want to position our country as a new origin for the Hass avocado and introduce it to the world and our most important buyers," he shared.

One of the industry's goals is to strengthen phytosanitary protocols, a key aspect for accessing more demanding markets like the United States. "Guatemala has protocols for different types of fruit, but there isn't a defined protocol for avocados yet. We are awaiting approval for U.S. market access, which will bring with it a specific phytosanitary protocol," explained Ríos. This progress will allow local producers to prepare to meet both U.S. phytosanitary and market requirements, opening a new door of opportunities.

Projections and sustainability

The future of the avocado industry in Guatemala looks promising, with strong growth expectations in the coming years. In addition to exports to Europe, the opening of the US market is expected to provide a significant boost.

"Having the opportunity to open up the U.S. market, taking advantage of our geographical proximity, will be very important," commented Ríos, who also noted that Anaguacate is constantly conducting training sessions and events to prepare producers for the demands of these new markets.

Additionally, Rios adds that Guatemala has the advantage of possessing large expanses of land with significant potential for avocado cultivation. However, one of the main challenges is related to climate change and extreme weather variations. "Lately, we've experienced very severe weather variations, rainy seasons that in many cases end in hail and heavy downpours that cause flooding, affecting the crops," Rios added.

Despite these challenges, Anaguacate is committed to a sustainability policy based on four key pillars: responsible water use, zero deforestation, compliance with labor regulations, and the protection of pollinators. These principles are designed to ensure sustainable production and foster environmental awareness among producers.

Finally, the avocado market in Guatemala is in the midst of expansion and consolidation. With a rich history and a promising future, the country has all the tools to position itself as a major competitor on the global avocado stage. Access to the United States market, along with improvements in phytosanitary protocols and sustainability practices, will be decisive factors for the success of this emerging industry. Meanwhile, Guatemala continues working to be recognized as a source of quality avocados, where flavor and a commitment to sustainability make all the difference.
