Colombian avocados consolidate their presence in the U.S. with quality and efficient logistics

In less than a decade, the Colombian Hass avocado has managed to position itself in the US market thanks to its high quality, a well-defined marketing strategy and a key logistical advantage.

Colombian avocados have experienced rapid growth in the U.S. market, achieving remarkable acceptance in the retail sector over the past 12 to 18 months. According to Andy Bruno, president of Naturipe Avocado Farms, this success is due to increased production, as the trees in Colombia have matured and begun to bear more fruit. The quality of the product has also been a key factor in its popularity, generating a demand that currently exceeds supply.

One of the reasons behind this rapid integration is the similarity to Mexican avocados, the main supplier to the United States. “They are identical in shape, color, and flavor,” explains Bruno, which has facilitated their acceptance among consumers. Furthermore, Colombia has capitalized on a strategic marketing window, shipping fruit in the summer, when the Mexican supply is less stable, and increasing its exports between November and February, coinciding with key events such as the Super Bowl and the Fourth of July.

Another key factor in the competitiveness of Colombian avocados is their logistical advantage. Thanks to its proximity to the U.S., maritime shipments reach Miami within five to seven days, enabling fast and efficient distribution. Naturipe Avocado Farms, which owns 630 hectares of orchards in Colombia and has strategic alliances with local producers, has diversified its growing regions to guarantee a continuous supply year-round. With these factors in place, Colombia is consolidating its position as a key player in the global avocado industry.
