How sustainability and quality are driving the rise of Colombian avocados

In recent years, Colombian avocados have experienced significant growth in production and exports, establishing themselves as one of the country's most profitable agricultural products. This fruit, renowned for its quality and flavor, has penetrated demanding markets such as Europe and the United States, becoming a key player in the global market.

The current outlook for Colombian avocados is promising. Colombia has become the world's second-largest producer of Hass avocados, second only to Mexico. In 2024, Colombian avocado exports exceeded $300 million, representing a 54.3% increase compared to 2023, according to the Colombian National Association of Foreign Trade (Analdex). This growth is partly due to the expansion of production in regions such as Antioquia, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca, where avocados have replaced traditional crops like coffee.

However, Colombia has faced several challenges in consolidating its avocado position in international markets. According to Jorge Molina Duque, Operations Manager of Quality Studio Co SAS, one of the main obstacles has been developing an export culture that allows for long-term work and values investments in certifications and good agricultural practices.

"The export culture, learning to work in the long term, valuing investments in certifications consistent with good agricultural practices, internal transport logistics and the focus on the spot market have been areas of continuous improvement," Molina Duque highlighted.

To improve the production and export of Colombian avocados, several key strategies have been implemented. The work of trade associations like Corpohass has been fundamental in promoting and assisting exporters to bring the fruit to markets such as the United States. Furthermore, importers have learned how to handle Colombian avocados, which has increased confidence in the product.

"The work of associations like CorpoHass has been key to promoting and assisting exporters, and importers have learned how to handle Colombian fruit," Molina Duque emphasized.

Quality certification and phytosanitary regulations have also had a significant impact on the competitiveness of Colombian avocados abroad. These certifications have raised awareness among producers, packers, and exporters about the importance of complying with international standards, although they are still on a learning curve. The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) has played a crucial role in phytosanitary control and export promotion, especially during events like the Super Bowl.

Regarding the markets that have shown the greatest growth and demand for Colombian avocados, the United States stands out as a key destination. The efforts made to promote exports to this market, combined with changes in importers' perceptions of current origins, have driven this trend. Furthermore, the short transit times from Colombian to US ports and importers' increased understanding of how to handle Colombian fruit have been decisive factors.

In terms of future prospects and opportunities, the avocado industry in Colombia is focused on continuing to safeguard the fruit's origin, working towards obtaining agricultural and social certifications, and standardizing exports based on dry matter content. "It is crucial to continue protecting the origin, working on both agricultural and social certifications, and supporting regulatory bodies like the ICA," emphasized Molina Duque. Furthermore, efforts are underway to develop alternative markets and stimulate domestic consumption.
