Colombia consolidates its position as a leading exporter of Hass avocados
In 2024, exports exceeded $309 million, making Hass avocado the country's second most exported fruit.
Colombia continues to strengthen its presence in the international Hass avocado market. In 2024, exports reached an FOB value of US$309 million, with a total volume of 138,000 tons at an average price of US$2.24 per kilo. This growth represents a 54% increase in value and a 21% increase in volume compared to the previous year, positioning the Hass avocado as the country's second most exported fruit, after bananas.
This performance is due to a combination of factors, including the professionalization of the sector, improvements in production processes, and greater access to key markets. Programs such as "Inspection at Origin," led by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), have been fundamental in guaranteeing high phytosanitary standards. This is complemented by the active participation of 20 packing plants in strategic regions such as Antioquia, Quindío, and Caldas, as well as the adoption of sustainable agricultural technologies.
The main destinations in 2024 were the Netherlands (39% of total exports), the United States (23%), and China (10%). The US market showed a remarkable leap with a 209% increase in value, while China, although with a smaller volume, demonstrated exponential growth. Despite these achievements, the sector faces challenges related to infrastructure, labor availability, and the institutional strengthening necessary to maintain long-term competitiveness.
