Colombia strengthens its position in the European avocado market
Year-round continuous production allows the country to compete effectively against other origins, although it faces logistical and cost challenges. Arba projects doubling its exports by 2025.
Colombia is consolidating its position as a strategic player in the supply of avocados to Europe thanks to its ability to produce year-round, a key advantage over countries like Peru, where supply is concentrated in just three months. This factor has allowed the Danper Group to secure stable programs with European supermarkets and open new opportunities in international markets.
However, the country's mountainous geography presents significant challenges. The lack of large flatlands increases production costs, while long distances to ports make logistics more expensive. Although initiatives like Puerto Antioquia aim to improve connectivity, competitiveness against giants like Mexico remains a challenge in the North American market.
Looking ahead to 2025, Arba Colombia projects exporting nearly six million kilograms of avocados, doubling the volume of the previous year. Europe remains its primary destination, but the company is also targeting China as an expanding market. To sustain this growth, the company is investing in technology and process automation, as well as diversifying its portfolio with products such as Tahiti limes and blueberries.
