Five natural antioxidants to relieve cold symptoms

The common cold, an ailment that affects the nasal passages and throat, is caused by exposure to the cold virus, which enters the body through the mouth, eyes, or nose. It is one of the most common respiratory infections. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults get a cold two to three times a year, while it is more frequent in babies and young children. Although it is usually harmless and lasts approximately 7 to 10 days, symptoms include nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, and sneezing.

"To alleviate these symptoms, strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation, you can turn to a diet that includes natural antioxidants such as almonds, papaya, carrots, spinach and avocado," says the Spanish Heart Foundation.

According to a study in Foods, almonds contain phenolic compounds that have health benefits, including antioxidant properties that protect against the common cold virus. "These phenolic compounds are key to strengthening the immune system by protecting against pathogenic organisms," indicates research on their biological importance.

Papaya, rich in lutein and vitamin C, helps prevent the common cold and strengthens the immune system, in addition to containing high levels of papain, which breaks down mucus. Carrots, rich in beta-carotene, a source of vitamin A with antioxidant properties, help regulate the immune response and prevent respiratory illnesses, according to the Journal of Functional Foods. Spinach, high in vitamins A and C, acts as a powerful antioxidant that improves immune function and reduces inflammation, as does papaya.

"Avocados contain flavonoids, anti-inflammatory substances that also help strengthen the immune system and protect against viral infections such as the common cold," explains a study published in Frontiers in Public Health. These flavonoids not only relieve cold symptoms but also fight other respiratory infections.
