Chile projects its best avocado season in over a decade
With a record harvest of 235,000 metric tons, the Chilean avocado industry is consolidating its position as an international benchmark in quality, sustainability and export volume.
The 2024-2025 avocado season in Chile is shaping up to be the most successful in over a decade, with an estimated production exceeding 235,000 metric tons, representing a 56.6% increase compared to the previous season. This record figure is due to favorable weather conditions, particularly abundant rainfall, and improvements in agricultural practices, which will also allow the season to extend into June, two months longer than usual.
This surge strengthens both domestic consumption and exports. With a per capita consumption of 8.2 kilos annually, Chile ranks as the world's second-largest consumer of avocados after Mexico. It is estimated that 55% of production will be destined for the domestic market, while the remaining 45% will be exported, primarily to Europe, followed by Latin America, Asia, and the United States, thus consolidating the international reach of Chilean avocados.
The sector is also experiencing leadership changes: Francisco Contardo-Sfeir has been appointed executive president of the Chilean Avocado Committee, succeeding Carmen Gloria Lüttges. With a strong track record in the industry and a focus on sustainability, Contardo-Sfeir will lead initiatives to maintain the reputation of Chilean avocados as a high-quality product with a low environmental impact. Under this strategic direction, the industry seeks to strengthen its global position while promoting responsible practices regarding water resources and the environment.
