Shipments to Europe fall: Peru dominates and South Africa pulls back sharply
During week 21, the European avocado market recorded a total of 935 shipments, marking a 7% drop compared to the previous week and a 10% decrease compared to the same period last year. This decline puts the weekly flow below 1,000 shipments, reflecting a more subdued pace of trade activity on the continent.
Peru continues to dominate, holding a 79% market share. Far behind are Kenya and Tanzania (8%), South Africa (7%), Colombia (4%), and Spain (1%). A particularly striking figure was the 57% decrease in shipments from South Africa, which have now fallen below 100 containers per week, suggesting a significant adjustment in its supply to Europe.
Regarding prices, the main adjustments were observed in Rotterdam, where the 18-gauge—the usual market benchmark—fell by 7%. However, smaller calibers showed divergent trends: the 30-gauge rose by 4% in the Netherlands, while in Spain it suffered a sharp decline, falling by 26%.
The 18 caliber, on the other hand, barely declined by 3% in the Spanish market, showing greater stability in the medium formats.
