Australia maintains a year-round avocado supply and strengthens its presence in Asia
Despite climate challenges, the country maintains a stable supply and aims to consolidate its growth in international markets.
Thanks to its diverse climate, Australia produces avocados year-round, with a slight dip in January and February. The harvest in Western Australia is currently winding down, while North Queensland is beginning its season with the Shepard variety, followed by Hass in April. However, heavy rains in the region have hampered transportation, although the situation has now returned to normal.
After years of oversupply, the Australian market is now experiencing a balance in supply, which has boosted local demand. Volumes are expected to increase again in July, when Western Australia resumes its peak production season until December. Meanwhile, exports continue to rise, with Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia as the main destinations, and expectations of increased shipments to Thailand, Japan, and India in the second half of the year.
The Indian market, recently opened to Australian avocados, is progressing gradually. "It will be a huge market, but it will take time," says John Tyas, director of Avocados Australia. In addition, the industry is focused on gaining access to China, a key objective for the coming years.
