APEAM guarantees continuity of Mexican avocados in the U.S. despite tariff threats
The Association of Avocado Producers and Exporters of Mexico assured that the fruit will maintain its zero tariff under the USMCA, reaffirming its commitment to bilateral trade and product quality.
In response to the U.S. government's announcements regarding potential tariffs on imported products, APEAM (the Association of Avocado Producers and Exporters of Mexico) reaffirmed its commitment to the continued export of avocados to its main market. The Association clarified that, as the only cooperating partner with USDA-APHIS, Mexican avocados will continue to enter the U.S. with a 0% tariff, provided they comply with the USMCA guidelines.
The avocado industry has proven to be a key economic driver for both nations. In 2024 alone, Mexican avocados generated US$7.5 billion in revenue in the United States, significantly impacting its GDP and labor income. In Mexico, the industry represented US$6 billion and more than 378,000 direct and indirect jobs, solidifying its importance to the national economy.
APEAM stated that they will continue to monitor the tariff situation and work with authorities to maintain uninterrupted trade flows. The Association also highlighted the efforts of the entire value chain and reaffirmed that it is the only authorized spokesperson for the country's more than 35,000 producers and 92 export packing plants to represent the sector's interests at the national and international levels.
