Avocados on the rise: Good supply and high demand ahead of the Super Bowl
Mexico, California, and Colombia guarantee supply, while a rebound in production is expected by March.
The supply of avocados has been steadily improving throughout January, with sizes 60, 48, and 70 predominating, according to Peter Shore of Calavo Growers Inc. Currently, the supply is coming from both Mexico and California, although compared to the same period last year, the supply is slightly lower. However, the quality for consumption remains high, especially for Mexican avocados, thanks to their high dry matter content.
In addition to Mexico and California, Colombia is also shipping fruit, concentrating its distribution on the East Coast. “Mexico had abundant summer rains, which favored crop development in the fall and winter. However, the harvest size remains small, with the majority being size 60 and smaller,” Shore explained.
With January to March being peak consumption months, demand remains strong, driven by the proximity of the Super Bowl, a key event for the avocado industry.
“Harvesting has been intense in recent weeks, and we expect to have a good volume for our February promotions. Production will increase again in March with more avocados from California, which will reach peak availability during the spring and summer,” Shore said.
