Philippine Hass avocado prepares to debut in the Japanese market

The Philippine Department of Agriculture is looking to open new export opportunities for Hass avocados in Japan, following success in other Asian markets.

Philippine Hass avocados could soon enter the Japanese market, according to Philstar Global. The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) reiterated its request to begin exporting the fruit in a recent meeting with Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya. The DA has been promoting avocados as a high-value crop with significant export potential. Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., DA Secretary, stated that the Philippine Hass avocado industry "expects a final announcement regarding market access this year," emphasizing that phytosanitary requirements were "agreed upon in principle" during his visit to Japan last December.

In 2023, Japan imported $160 million worth of avocados, according to USDA data, demonstrating the growing demand for this fruit in the Asian country. Last September, the first shipment of fresh Philippine avocados arrived in South Korea after 15 years of negotiations, marking a significant step forward in the Philippines' international trade efforts. This achievement reinforces the Department of Agriculture's confidence in replicating this success in Japan.

Currently, Philippine avocado markets include China, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei Darussalam, the United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has demonstrated a strong commitment to the country's agricultural development, boosting Philippine fruit exports. The potential opening of the Japanese market represents a significant opportunity to further expand the international presence of Philippine Hass avocados.
