Avocado in transition: Peru and South Africa take the lead after a successful Mediterranean campaign

With the season over in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, the first containers from the Southern Hemisphere are now en route to Europe. An increase in Peruvian volumes is expected, while South Africa and Brazil prepare to enter the market.

The European avocado market is entering a key transition phase. As Mediterranean production from Morocco, Spain, and Portugal comes to an end, the first shipments from Peru are already arriving. According to François Bellivier, head of development at Capexo, the real shift between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres will occur around Easter, with large volumes from Peru expected in the coming months. South African avocados are also expected to arrive, while Brazil and Kenya face logistical challenges that will delay their market entry.

Although it's too early for definitive figures, a significant increase in production is anticipated in Peru, driven by the recovery following El Niño. However, two challenges could mark the season: managing the peak production and the size variations. Smaller sizes, preferred by the restaurant industry, are expected to dominate until June, while larger sizes, which are more difficult to market, may require a change of origin if they become too concentrated towards the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the Mediterranean campaign closed with positive results. Despite challenging weather conditions, prices recovered and sales were brisk. Morocco stood out for its volume and quality, Spain continued its expansion beyond Andalusia, and Portugal provided a strategic presence. All indications suggest that if these regions continue to develop, they could reduce their reliance on Latin American sources during the first quarter of the year.
