Avocado in Chile: A record season with its highest production in 15 years
These figures exceeded the sector's initial estimates and explain the best production since the 2009-2010 cycle (290 thousand tons).
57% of the production was destined for exports and 43% remained in the local market, which shows the high national consumption and the preference of Chileans for this fruit.
The 2024-2025 avocado season in Chile has concluded with a production of 240,000 tons, making it the best season for the sector in the last 15 years. This figure surpasses initial industry estimates and approaches the record production of the 2009-2010 season, which reached 290,000 tons, according to data from the Chilean Avocado Committee, an association that brings together avocado farmers, marketers, and exporters.
A diversified destination for production
Of the total harvested during the season, 57% (136,000 tons) was destined for export, while 43% ( 77,000 tons) remained in the domestic market. Europe remained the main destination market, accounting for 57% of shipments, followed by Latin America, with 25.1% and 34,000 tons, where Argentina (29,000 tons) has acquired an increasingly important role, consolidating itself as a key player within the regional market. Asia accounted for 8.6% of exports, North America 8.5%, and Oceania 0.8%.
High national consumption and a preference for Hass avocados
It is worth noting that half of the production (43%) remained in the domestic market, a unique characteristic in the agricultural industry, reflecting high national consumption and Chileans' preference for this fruit. Chile is the world's second-largest consumer of Hass avocados, with 8.6 kilos per capita per year.
A significant economic impact
The CEO of the Avocado Committee, Francisco Contardo-Sfeir, commented on the closing of this historic season: “These results are excellent news for the sector and reflect the economic impact of our industry, since avocados mobilize a diverse production chain —with small, medium and large producers, exporters, logistics operators and distributors— that together generate more than US$ 700 million a year.”
“This positive performance of our industry has also been accompanied by significant work on sustainability that we have carried out at the Avocado Committee since 2020, promoting a roadmap that seeks to consolidate agricultural practices aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda. Our goal is to continue strengthening responsible production that puts people, communities, and the environment at the center,” added Contardo-Sfeir.
The 2024-2025 season has been a success for the avocado industry in Chile, and the sector is expected to continue growing and strengthening in the future. With record production and high domestic consumption, Chilean avocados have a promising future in the international market.
