Colombian avocado: solid growth, but with challenges in logistics and competitiveness
Colombia has successfully positioned itself in the international Hass avocado market, but faces challenges in infrastructure, regulations, and global competition. A commitment to sustainability and market diversification will be key to its consolidation.
Colombian Hass avocados have seen explosive growth in the global market, with over 38,000 hectares under cultivation. However, this boom has also brought significant challenges, such as ensuring product quality and adapting to evolving market standards. According to Katheryn Mejía, president of Corpohass, the key lies not only in increasing production but also in responding effectively to the demands of international consumers.
One of the biggest obstacles is the logistics infrastructure. The distance between growing areas and ports can add up to 24 hours to transport times, increasing export costs. The opening of Puerto Antioquia promises to alleviate this problem, improving the supply chain. Furthermore, Colombia's diverse climate, while allowing for consistent production year-round, also generates variations in fruit ripening, requiring adjustments in quality management to maintain product consistency in destination markets.
Despite these challenges, Colombia has successfully transformed its environmental requirements into a competitive advantage. The obligation to dedicate 30% of agricultural land to ecological conservation has enabled more sustainable production, aiding in the natural control of pests and strengthening the certifications necessary to access markets such as Europe. With increasing global consumption and well-defined export strategies, the country is positioning itself as a key player in the avocado industry, seeking to compete with giants like Mexico and Peru through quality, sustainability, and logistical efficiency.
