Avocados in Africa: Africa is an avocado farm lover's dream: abundant uncultivated arable land, roughly more than half of the world's total; tropical climates that allow long growing seasons; a young workforce; and an expanding population that provides an easily available market for agricultural products.
Africa is the second largest and second most populous continent in the world, after Asia in both categories. It has a vast territory of approximately 30.3 million km², including adjacent islands, covering 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area.
It is important to visit Africa and learn more about our production and market opportunities in a continent that is the fastest growing in the avocado industry.
Avocados in Kenya: Kenya's impressive annual volume growth rate and access to new markets have helped the country overtake South Africa as Africa's top avocado exporter. The East African nation became Africa's largest avocado exporter in 2017, shipping a record 51,507 tons worldwide. South Africa, traditionally the world's leading exporter of fruit from the agriculturally rich continent, relinquished its position, falling behind Kenya for the first time ever with 43,492 tons.
The EU market is already mature for Kenyan avocados, and significant growth can only be achieved by developing these new and strategic emerging markets for Kenyan avocados, especially China and Russia. The group of Kenya's largest importers includes the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and, more recently, the Russian Federation.
The future of avocados in Kenya looks very promising.
