Chileans are avocado fanatics: per capita consumption reaches a record high of almost 9 kilos in 2025

Year after year, the avocado continues to reaffirm its privileged position on the Chilean table.

  • The high preference of the national population for this fruit was explained by the good production that occurred during the 2024-25 season, which allowed more than 112 thousand tons to be allocated to the domestic market.
  • Over the past five years, per capita consumption has increased by 74.5%, from 5.1 kilos per person to the current 8.9 kilos.

March 3, 2026 - Year after year, avocados continue to solidify their privileged position on Chilean tables. According to the latest data from the Chilean Avocado Committee, per capita consumption reached 8.9 kilos per person per year in 2025, surpassing the 8.6 kilos of 2024. This confirms a sustained upward trend in recent years, maintaining Chileans as the second largest consumers of Hass avocados in the world, second only to Mexico.

In addition to the strong preference among Peruvians for this fruit—thanks to its flavor and positive nutritional benefits—this increase is explained by the strong production during the 2024-25 season, in which more than 112,000 tons were allocated for domestic consumption, representing approximately 47% of the total harvest for that cycle. It is worth noting that avocados are the crop most destined for the local market.

Another relevant factor was the more than 60,000 tons of imports that were destined for domestic consumption, totaling a trade in Chile of close to 178,000 tons.

In this regard, Francisco Contardo Sfeir, executive president of the Avocado Committee, stated that “when a country consumes almost 9 kilos per person per year, we are facing a mature and solid market. The favorable production conditions have allowed us to better supply the domestic market, which speaks volumes about the competitiveness of our sector, considering that the size of the productive hectares has remained largely unchanged in recent years.”

“The challenge now is to continue moving forward responsibly, taking care of resources and maintaining the quality standards that distinguish Chilean avocados,” the executive added.

Over time, the Hass avocado has become an essential fruit in the Chilean diet, with consumption growing year after year. In 2000, the estimated average per capita consumption was 2 kilos per person, but demand has been increasing, and in the last five years it has climbed 74.5%, from 5.1 kilos per person to the current 8.9 kilos.

The industry outlook remains positive, considering that production projections for the 2025-26 season point to 255,000 tons, a 6% increase over the 2024-25 season.

Considered a "superfood," avocados are a natural source of potassium, folic acid, vitamins A, B, and E, as well as healthy fats that contribute to heart health. The combination of flavor, versatility, and nutritional benefits has strengthened their position as a key food in the Chilean diet.
