Argentina gains ground in the international avocado market

International

November 4, 2026

Argentina has now established itself as one of the most important destinations for avocados in South America. For Chile and Brazil, it is the second most important market after Europe.

Imports by Argentina continue to grow, which raises the following question for exporting countries: What volume can they place in that market and at what point in their season?

Today, three main sources account for the majority of the supply: Chile provides around 65%, followed by Brazil with 18% and Peru with 15%. Current import growth is between 10% and 15%.

Looking ahead, I see room for continued growth of between 10% and 20% annually. However, achieving this pace will depend largely on the volume that the three main exporters can contribute.

Chile can take advantage of its proximity and the demand for small sizes.

Chile is the main supplier to Argentina, with a window that allows it to ship avocados from July or August until approximately April, depending on seasonal availability. For this origin, the proximity to Argentina allows for shorter transit times and the shipment of fruit with higher dry matter content.

It is important to consider what types of fruit the destination market buys. Argentina readily accepts medium and small sizes, offering Chilean exporters an outlet for part of their total volume.

In this scenario, I see an opportunity to work on promoting Chilean avocados in Argentina, consolidating a market that already has an important weight in Chile's commercial calendar.

Brazil gains ground mid-year and Peru complements the offering

Brazil also has room to increase its shipments to Argentina as production grows. At the start of its season, Europe is the priority destination, especially before the Peruvian supply begins.

However, Brazil continues to harvest mid-year, when more fruit is available in Europe and Chilean supply in Argentina decreases. At that time, the Argentine market becomes an attractive destination for Brazilian exporters.

Peru will continue to contribute volume. The interesting point to analyze is that the three origins can supply Argentina at different times of the year. For importers in this market, the combination expands purchasing options, while for exporters it helps determine which weeks are most advantageous to focus their sales efforts.

If Chile capitalizes on its proximity and demand, Brazil strengthens its efforts, and Peru maintains its contribution, Argentina has room to continue gaining ground as a destination. For avocado exporters, it's important to consider including this market in their seasonal planning, evaluating which fruit to offer, during which weeks, and with which buyers to work.
