Westfalia is promoting the "avocado of the future" with a genetic library of more than 140 varieties
The company presented its innovative live avocado collection at Fruit Attraction 2025, created to develop new varieties that respond to consumer tastes and climate challenges.
The flavor, texture, and consistency of tomorrow's avocados could be custom-designed. At Fruit Attraction 2025, Westfalia presented its "avocado variety library," a unique project that brings together more than 140 living cultivars—including the renowned Gem and Carmen-Hass—and aims to drive the creation of new generations of fruit adapted to emerging markets, changing climate conditions, and specific consumer preferences.
The project is part of the Orchard of the Future program, which brings together governments, universities, and private entities to develop cultivars using biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and precision breeding. According to Dan Sargent, director of plant research at Westfalia University, up to 1,000 genetically unique seedlings are obtained each year and undergo a seven-year selection process before reaching commercial trials. Only the best become new varieties.
The novelty lies in direct consumer participation. Westfalia seeks to incorporate public opinion on flavor, texture, and ripening quality so that future avocados are adapted not only to climate and logistics but also to the customer experience. “We want them to try a variety and say, ‘Wow, this was different!’” says Sargent. With this commitment to science, innovation, and consumer connection, the company aims to redefine the evolution of avocados worldwide.
