A year-end marked by declines in the European avocado market
The European market also felt the effects of the final weeks of 2024, with a decrease in fruit arrivals reflecting the challenges of the year's end. During week 52, 539 containers of avocados were received, marking a 21% drop compared to the previous week.
The main exporting countries to the continent were Israel, Colombia, Chile, and Spain, with a fairly balanced distribution: 31% of shipments came from Israel, 30% from Colombia, 17% from Chile, and 14% from Spain. Despite the overall decline, Israel and Colombia managed to slightly increase their volumes compared to the previous week.
However, the decline in shipments from Chile is the most pronounced trend. Chilean volume fell 27% compared to the previous week, consolidating a sustained week-over-week decrease. Morocco, another major supplier, also reduced its shipments during this period.
Regarding prices, the picture is mixed and offers no clear conclusions. In Rotterdam, Netherlands, smaller sizes remained stable compared to the previous week, with no significant increases or decreases. On the other hand, size 18, a large size, experienced a 10% drop, while in Spain, prices show a different trend: they are lower than in the Netherlands.
With the start of 2025, industry players are cautiously observing how volumes and prices will evolve in this key market, aware that the first weeks of the year will be crucial in setting the pace for the season.
