Bioacoustic technology boosts avocado pollination and productivity

AgriSound and global producer Westfalia Fruit are developing a real-time monitoring system to optimize pollinator activity and improve crop yields in South Africa.

British company AgriSound has partnered with international group Westfalia Fruit to study pollinator behavior in avocado orchards using real-time monitoring technology. Through the use of bioacoustic sensors, the project aims to analyze pollination patterns and understand how different avocado varieties interact with pollinators, with the goal of increasing fruit set, yield, and quality.

The first pilot project will be implemented in two Westphalian plantations located in Tzaneen, South Africa, where AgriSound sensors will record both insect activity and microclimatic conditions. This data will strengthen genetic improvement programs, optimize bee management, and reduce carbon emissions associated with agricultural practices. According to AgriSound, pollination represents a high-impact, yet underutilized, resource capable of generating significant improvements in crop sustainability and productivity.

For Westfalia, the project reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainable production in the avocado sector. “This collaboration offers us a new perspective for understanding and optimizing pollination, strengthening our resilience to environmental challenges,” highlighted Research Director Zelda van Rooyen. The results of the study, which will run until 2026, will serve as the basis for implementing a global pollinator management model within the company’s international network of growers.
