Avocado growers in New Zealand anticipate a strong 2025 season

After two challenging seasons, farmers anticipate a rebound in production thanks to favorable weather conditions and an optimized export strategy.

New Zealand avocado growers are optimistic about the 2025 season, expecting to reach seven million trays, a significant increase from the five million trays produced the previous season. Spring has brought strong flowering and fruit set in key growing regions, reinforcing the sector's growth potential, according to Matthew Ball, marketing director of New Zealand Avocado.

The Bay of Plenty leads production with nearly 50% of the national total, while Northland contributes 45%. Although half of the harvest is destined for the domestic market, between 50% and 60% is exported, with Australia as the main destination. However, Asia is gaining prominence, especially South Korea, Japan, and Thailand. To improve profitability, the industry has revised its export strategy, seeking a better alignment between supply and demand.

Despite recent challenges and increasing competition from South America, producers are confident of a more stable season. In Northland, Greg Rathbun notes that several farmers have switched to other crops or returned to livestock farming, but favorable weather and growth in the international market have renewed optimism. With improved conditions and refined strategies, the sector is poised to solidify its position in the global market.
