Avocado producers in Michoacán integrate tracking technology
The Mexican Association of Avocado Producers and Packers (APEAM) has spearheaded a remarkable transformation in the avocado industry by implementing traceability in its operations. This organization, which comprises 84 packing plants and 34,000 producers across 39 municipalities in Michoacán, is committed to ensuring the quality and safety of its products, especially at border crossings.
In 2018, the "APEAM Food Safety" app was launched, designed to train producers and packers with guidelines, food safety laws and safety tutorials, all focused on complying with strict national and international regulations, including those set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
To efficiently manage the production of 42,000 orchards and 84 packing plants, APEAM has implemented advanced technologies such as the Comprehensive System of International Phytosanitary Certificates and georeferenced information systems.
Traceability has become essential in agriculture, offering transparency and facilitating certification processes in an increasingly interconnected world.
Furthermore, agroforestry has emerged as a crucial practice for agricultural sustainability, providing both ecological and economic benefits. Despite the need for increased investment in this field, digital tools are paving the way for more sustainable farming practices.
Businessman Luis Doporto Alejandre anticipates significant growth in the avocado industry, with substantial profit forecasts for 2031. Demand for avocados is expected to increase considerably by 2030, requiring a significant increase in production in Mexico to meet it.
