Avocado producers in Morocco seek integration and quality to face global challenges

At a historic meeting in Kenitra, the Moroccan avocado sector is discussing strategies to consolidate its international presence, improve the quality of its production, and create a unified body to represent its interests.

On January 15, Kenitra became the epicenter of the Moroccan avocado sector, where more than 150 producers and exporters gathered under the auspices of the Moroccan Avocado Association (MAVA). During the event, Abdellah El Yamlahi, president of the association, emphasized the urgent need for integration to meet the demands of the global market. “International competition compels us to focus on quality if we want to maintain the strategic assets we have acquired,” he stated.

One of the key points of the meeting was expansion into markets like the United States, a challenge that demands compliance with strict quality standards. According to El Yamlahi, simply producing large volumes is not enough; avocados must meet the highest aesthetic criteria of Category A to guarantee their acceptance in the most demanding markets. However, this growth is occurring within a context of global overproduction, which has driven down prices, although this phase is expected to be temporary.

In addition to business strategies, attendees discussed the creation of an interprofessional organization to represent the entire sector before the government and other key stakeholders. This initiative aims to prevent situations like the suspension of irrigation subsidies in the past, which left the sector unprotected. El Yamlahi announced that the formation of this organization is underway and that the Morocco Avocado Conference, an event designed to consolidate the sector's organization and project it into the future, will be held soon.
