Global positioning: Peru stands out as the second largest exporter of avocados with access to 67 markets

Peruvian producers have significantly expanded avocado cultivation, exceeding 40,000 hectares certified and owned by 5,760 farmers, primarily small family producers with farms of less than five hectares. In a statement, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) announced that the Malaysian Department of Agriculture has officially approved the phytosanitary requirements for Peruvian avocados to enter this key Asian market.

This achievement expands access for Peruvian "green gold" to 67 markets worldwide, complying with rigorous sanitary and phytosanitary protocols established by each importing country. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Midagri), production sites and processing plants wishing to export avocados to Malaysia must be registered on the official list of the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), which will be finalized before each export season.

Emphasizing its agricultural export potential, Peru has become the world's second-largest exporter of avocados, shipping over 500,000 tons of Hass avocados in 2021 to destinations such as the United States, Chile, China, Japan, South Korea, and countries in the European Union. The La Libertad region leads exports, registering 207,368 tons during the 2021-2022 season, followed by Lambayeque, Lima, Ica, Junín, Áncash, and Ayacucho.

Rising global demand underscores the need to open more trade opportunities for these agricultural products, generating employment and improving the quality of life for family farmers.
