Portugal identifies a new area with high potential for avocado production and convenes a technical talk
An agricultural area located an hour north of Lisbon is emerging as a potential new avocado production hub in Portugal. According to specialist Gonzalo Vargas of Global Humic, the area boasts a mild climate, access to water, and agronomic conditions that favor the crop's growth.
In this region, the removal of 3,000 hectares of fruit orchards is planned, primarily pear plantations that are currently in decline. Given this situation, the organizers of the technical workshop—Gonzalo Vargas (Global Humic) and Viveros Brokaw España—will propose avocado as a productive alternative and present the results of their recent trials.
Vargas reported that the young orchards established in the area have shown excellent performance, even in areas prone to frost. With proper altitude control and crop management, the trees have grown vigorously and produced a good amount of fruit. Furthermore, the local climate, milder than Huelva's and less hot than Málaga's, reinforces the region's potential for avocado production.
With the aim of discussing these possibilities with the Portuguese agricultural sector, the organizers invited producers, technicians, nursery owners and cooperatives to participate in the talk “Avocado: will it be an alternative?”, where the results will be presented and a space will be opened to share doubts, experiences and perspectives on the future of the crop in the country.
The meeting will take place on November 27th at 11:00 a.m. and will be an opportunity for the sector to analyze firsthand the potential of this new area and the role it could play in the future of avocados in Portugal.
