Avocado exports from the State of Mexico could materialize by the end of 2024
In the State of Mexico, the municipality of Coatepec Harinas stands out as the leading avocado producer, with ambitious aspirations to break into the international market. The recently created Association of Avocado Producers of the State of Mexico has set as its primary objective exporting to the United States, a milestone not yet achieved by products from the State of Mexico. Currently, local producers are shipping their products to destinations such as Japan, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and various parts of Europe, but their sights are set on the U.S. market.
Camilo Díaz Gasca, an avocado producer from Coatepec Harinas, emphasized the importance of this initiative for the sector. With exports expected to begin by the end of this year or early 2025, a promising outlook is emerging for all involved. The potential economic impact is considerable, with more than 2,200 producers in Coatepec Harinas potentially benefiting directly from exports. Other municipalities, such as Temascaltepec and Donato Guerra, have also made progress in obtaining the necessary certification, which promises a significant boost for the region.
Despite challenges such as water scarcity and growing security concerns, producers in the southern part of the State of Mexico are determined to overcome these obstacles. It is hoped that collaboration among federal, state, and municipal authorities will help address these concerns and ensure a favorable environment for the sector's development.
With a vast territory dedicated to avocado cultivation and a considerable annual production, the State of Mexico is positioned as a major player in the national and international markets. The aspiration to enter the U.S. market represents a significant step in the evolution of the State of Mexico's avocado industry, offering new opportunities for growth and economic development for the region.
