Peru reduces avocado exports by 10% but achieves higher prices in 2024
The decrease in the volume of avocado exported in Peru, estimated at 471,934 tons, is offset by a 30% increase in prices during the key months of the campaign, driven by new small producers.
Peru has registered a 10% decrease in avocado export volume through week 33 of the current season, reaching 471,934 tons, compared to the previous season. According to Elizabeth Miranda, commercial manager of Agrobusiness International Peru, this reduction was concentrated in May and June, crucial periods in which the high supply of fruit drove an approximate 30% increase in prices.
The current season saw increased avocado production in the highlands, along with the addition of new orchards, as a result of the effects of climate change on large producers, especially in the north of the country. Miranda noted that the entry of new, previously unmapped small-scale producers has helped mitigate some of the decline in production, maintaining Peru's position as a key player in the global avocado market.
Europe remains the primary destination for Peruvian avocados, absorbing 56% of total exports, with the Netherlands and Spain as the main buyers. They are followed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. Although the volumes shipped to Asian markets such as Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong are not yet significant, they represent a strategic expansion for Peru. Miranda anticipates that Peru will continue to be the world's second-largest avocado exporter, highlighting the importance of small-scale producers in this achievement.
