Peruvian avocados lead agricultural exports in the first half of 2024
With a 29% increase in value compared to the previous year, fresh avocados have consolidated their position as Peru's leading agricultural export, despite a decline in export volume. Agro-exports reached US$4.309 billion, driven by significant growth in key markets.
In the first half of 2024, fresh avocado exports positioned themselves as the leading Peruvian fruit product, reaching a value of US$754 million. This performance reflects a 29% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to figures from ComexPerú. Despite a slight decrease of 0.3% in export volume, the 29.4% increase in the average export price was key to the fruit's strong performance in international markets.
Peruvian agricultural exports as a whole accounted for 13% of total sales worldwide between January and June 2024, totaling US$4.309 billion, an 11.8% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. This rebound was largely due to strong results in May and June, with year-on-year increases of 16.3% and 36.9%, respectively. However, the export volume fell by 14.8% in the first half of the year, although a slight increase of 1.5% was observed in June.
Among the key destinations for agricultural exports, the United States remained the main market, accounting for 29.4% of sales, followed by the Netherlands, Spain, and Chile. Also noteworthy are the increases in exports to Indonesia and Malaysia, with year-on-year growth of 336% and 115%, respectively, driven primarily by cocoa beans. Domestically, Lima led shipments, followed by Ica, La Libertad, and Cajamarca, the latter experiencing a 114% increase thanks to coffee exports.
